About

In May 1942 Pastor Gibson began our church with 13 members. We are not sure what this fellowship of believers was called but we know they must have had a vision for ministry and joining together to worship the Lord.  Pastor Gibson pastored this group until 1943.

R.O. Woodruff remained the pastor of the Church of God until 1949.

At some point the church was moved to Pleasanton Rd and was called Pleasanton Rd. Church of God. it was located at Pleasanton Rd. and Cain St.

In 1943, Pastor R.O. Woodruff became pastor of the church, from property records we have found, the church was located in lots 8 & 9, Block 129 in New City Block of 9400.  The physical address according to these coordinates is somewhere between 2914-2918 Commercial Ave.

In 1940, this area where the church was at was in the city of Terrell Wells, TX.  There were 150 people who resided in this city.  The church was organized with the Church of God, Cleveland, TN in 1944 just before the General Assembly.  This made Southside the first Church of God congregation in San Antonio, TX.

In 1947, Terrell Wells was annexed into the city of San Antonio and by the 1950’s it was no longer found on maps.

Pastor Brook followed Bro. Woodruff and he was the pastor from 1949-1952.

Bro. Brook was then followed by Pastor Brewer, who then Pastored from 1952-1956.

The next pastor was Wm B. Nelms who pastored from 1959-1959.

In July 1959, Bro. W.E. Rodgers became the pastor and he pastored until October 1960.

At this point in the history of the church, we are not sure when the congregation began meeting at the Boswell location, because we have no record when the property was acquired.  We did however, find a plat record from Dec. 2, 1960, when Pastor Rodgers signed for the property at lots 6, 7, & 8 Block 2 NCB 7841 to be to be named Southside Church of God Subdivision.  We do not know if Bro. Rodgers was still the pastor when he signed this or he had already resigned, because international offices show he resigned in October of 1960.

Bro. Rodgers was followed by C.C. Rains who pastored from Nov. 1960-Dec. 1962.

Then Bro. C.L. Stall pastored from Jan 1963-Aug. 1963.

The next pastor was Bro. C. G. Wiley and he desired for the church to have an actual building instead of the army barracks on the property that they were meeting in so he found a way to raise money to start a building project.

We were told there was a bakery in the area that was going out of business, so Bro. Wiley went and bought all of their donut making equipment and the church members met every Thursday morning to make donuts and then sale them to raise funds.

Bro. Wiley was the pastor for 4 years and what a tremendous mark he left as he served here.

Bro. Don & Sissy Stovall followed Bro. Wiley and they worked on completing the wing additions when they arrived as pastors.  The Stovall’s had a lot of military families that they ministered to and had many great memories like making peanut brittle.  The Stovall’s resigned in July 1968.

The Stovall’s were then followed in August 1968 by Pastor Charles and Betty Prince.

Bro. Prince, when talking with Pastor Brady, talked about how they also ministered to a lot of military families.  Sis. Prince said we had many young service men attending our church.  She also said she remembered the little parsonage with the red shutters.

The next pastor was Rev. Darrell and Beverly Mouser and they served at Southside for 4 years.

Ronald Smith followed the Mousers and they pastored from June 1975-May 1981.

The Smiths were then followed by Pastor Johnny and Sheila House, and they pastored from June 1981-Aug 1985.

The next pastor was Pastor Terry and Connie Cross.  The Crosses came to Southside in Sept. 1985-and pastored until Aug 1988.

In Sept 1988, Southside COG again experienced a pastoral change and Pastor David & Denise Hacker began their ministry in San Antonio.  They, with their boys Billy & Brady, would find themselves planting and making SA home for many years.  For nearly 26 years the Hackers pastored the Southside family and with their family being thousands of miles away, this congregation became more than just the sheep they ministered to, they became their family. â€‹

Pastor David & Denise definitely left a legacy here at Southside and we are thankful for all that they did for this church body.

The Lord called Pastor David home in Feb of 2014.  Before his passing, he asked his son, Brady, who was pastoring in Victoria, TX to pray about coming and taking his place as pastor of Southside.  Brady told his dad he would pray about it, but he just didn’t think he would be able to follow him, it would just be too hard.  But at the home going celebration, as he was preaching his Dad’s service, the Holy Spirit spoke to him and said this is where you need to be.

Pastors Brady & Vanessa are both humbled and honored to be in this place, following such giants of the faith, mighty men and women of God to lead this church into the future that God has for us.

We are so thankful for the legacy and heritage left by all of those who have faithfully served before us.

We applaud the work that was done and know the number of lives touched in all the years the church has been in existence could never be numbered here on earth.

We will continue to honor our past but we will embrace our future and trust that He who began a good work will see it through to completion, so we will work till He comes to grow the Kingdom and reach the harvest before us as we continually connect the love of Christ to the hearts in our community and help them grow in their walk with the Lord.
